Redefining the Future of Work in AEC: A Conversation with Mandy McGill

Redefining the Future of Work in AEC: A Conversation with Mandy McGill

In a recent episode of the Activating Curiosity podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Mandy McGill, founder of Aedifico.ai, to explore a bold and timely question: What does the future of work look like in the AEC industry...and how do we get there?

Mandy’s journey is rooted in deep industry experience, a passion for entrepreneurship, and a growing frustration with the status quo. After years of placing talent into roles that often led to the same cultural challenges they were trying to escape, she asked herself a powerful question: What if we could help people build their own path instead of placing them into someone else’s?

From Centralized Employment to Decentralized Opportunity

At the heart of our conversation was the concept of decentralization, not just as a buzzword, but as a structural shift in how we think about talent, projects, and purpose. Mandy’s platform, Aedifico (Latin for “I build”), flips the traditional employment model on its head. Instead of staffing companies, it staffs projects.

Here’s how it works:

  • A developer enters a scope of work into the platform.
  • AI matches that scope with individuals who have the skills and passion to deliver it.
  • No resumes. No job descriptions. Just alignment between need and capability.

This model empowers individuals to choose the work they want to do, not just the work their employer happens to win. It’s a shift from employment to engagement, from hierarchy to fluidity.

Barriers to Change: Culture, Procurement, and “My Guy” Syndrome

Of course, change doesn’t come easy. Mandy shared candid insights into the resistance she’s encountered, from HR departments who feel displaced, to procurement teams who don’t know how to categorize a platform like Aedifico.

And then there’s the deeply human element: relationships. In construction, “I’ve got my guy” is still a common refrain. But as Mandy pointed out, this loyalty can unintentionally perpetuate exclusion and inefficiency. The future demands new ways of thinking, not just new tools.

Why This Matters Now

We’re in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution. AI, fintech, and digital platforms are reshaping every industry, and AEC is no exception. Mandy’s vision isn’t just about technology; it’s about liberating talent and reclaiming purpose.

As we discussed, the cost of not evolving is steep. Burnout, disengagement, and a shrinking talent pool are already taking their toll. If we don’t create systems that serve people better, we risk losing the very people we need to build the future.

What You Can Do

  • Share the conversation. This podcast episode is a starting point for deeper dialogue. Let’s get more people thinking about what’s possible.
  • Explore Aedifico. Whether you’re a developer, a project manager, or a curious leader, take a look at how this platform is reimagining project staffing.
  • Challenge your defaults. Ask yourself: Are we hiring the best people for the job, or just the most familiar?

Final Thought

Mandy said it best: “Success is when someone who’s been overlooked for years can finally pursue work on their own terms.” That’s not just a business goal, it’s a human one.

Let’s keep building and leading with curiosity.
